How to Play Fortnite With a Controller on PC (Setup, Settings & Fixes)
October 4, 2026
Fortnite has full built-in controller support on PC, so you don't need extra software. Plug in a controller, press a button, and the game switches over. This guide covers connecting Xbox, PlayStation and Switch Pro controllers, the settings worth changing first, and what to do when the controller isn't detected.
How to play Fortnite with a controller on PC
- Connect the controller using one of the methods below, before or after launching the game.
- Launch Fortnite from the Epic Games Launcher.
- Press any button on the controller. The on-screen prompts switch from keyboard to controller icons, and you can now play.
Fortnite switches input automatically. Touch the mouse or keyboard and it switches back, and pressing a controller button switches again. That is also why the button prompts sometimes flicker between the two.
Connecting each controller
Xbox controller (Series X|S, Xbox One)
- USB: plug it in with a USB-C (Series) or micro-USB (One) cable. Windows sets it up automatically.
- Bluetooth: hold the pair button on top of the controller until the Xbox logo flashes quickly, then on PC go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth and select it.
- Xbox Wireless Adapter: plug in the adapter, press its button, then press the controller's pair button.
Xbox controllers are the easiest option on Windows and work with no setup.
PlayStation controller (PS5 DualSense, PS4 DualShock 4)
- USB: connect with a cable. This is the most reliable method.
- Bluetooth: hold PS + Create (PS5) or PS + Share (PS4) until the light bar flashes, then add it in Windows Bluetooth settings.
Fortnite supports PlayStation controllers natively and shows PlayStation button icons. Extra DualSense features such as haptics and adaptive triggers are generally more limited on PC than on PS5.
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Connect with USB or pair it over Bluetooth (hold the small sync button on top). Support varies more than with Xbox or PlayStation controllers. If it isn't recognised, see the troubleshooting section below.
On console
There's nothing to set up: the controller is the default. On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, just launch Fortnite. You can also plug a mouse and keyboard into a console, and the game switches the same way.
Best controller settings to change first
Open Settings (the menu in the top-right of the lobby) and go to the controller tabs. Exact menu names change with updates, but these are the settings that make the biggest difference.
Button layout: Builder Pro
Pick Builder Pro as your layout. It puts a building piece on each trigger and bumper, so you can build with one press instead of switching modes. Almost every experienced controller player uses it, and learning it early saves you relearning later.
Sensitivity
| Setting | Good starting value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Look sensitivity | 4–6 | How fast you turn |
| Aim (ADS) sensitivity | 4–6 | How fast you turn while aiming down sights |
| Build/Edit sensitivity multiplier | Above 1.0 | Faster turning while building |
Start in the middle and change one value at a time. Play a few matches before judging, because muscle memory takes time to adjust.
Aim assist
Aim assist only applies to controllers and is on by default. Keep it on at 100% strength unless you have a specific reason to lower it. Turning it down mainly makes aiming harder.
Edit hold time
Lower it from the default so that editing a build piece happens faster. Very low values cause accidental edits, so lower it gradually.
Deadzone
If your character drifts without you touching the stick, raise the left stick deadzone slightly until it stops. If aiming feels sluggish at the start of a stick movement, lower the right stick deadzone a little. Worn sticks need a higher deadzone.
Controller not working in Fortnite? Fixes
Work through these in order:
- Press a button on the controller after the game opens. Fortnite only switches input when it sees controller activity.
- Disconnect other input devices such as a second controller, a racing wheel or a joystick. Fortnite can grab the wrong one.
- Use a USB cable to rule out Bluetooth problems. A charge-only cable carries no data, so try another cable if it isn't detected.
- Check Windows sees it: search "Set up USB game controllers" in the Start menu. If the controller isn't listed there, the problem is Windows or the cable, not Fortnite.
- Close other controller apps. Steam's controller features (if Steam is open), DS4Windows and similar tools can intercept the controller. Close them and restart Fortnite.
- Update the controller: Xbox controllers update through the Xbox Accessories app, PlayStation controllers through Sony's firmware updater for PC.
- Verify the game files: in the Epic Games Launcher, go to Library → Fortnite → (…) → Manage → Verify.
Stick drift that comes back after you raise the deadzone usually means the stick hardware is worn. That's a hardware problem, and no setting will fully fix it.
Controller vs mouse and keyboard
Neither one is simply better:
- Controller: easier to pick up, comfortable from a couch, and you get aim assist. Building and editing is slower to master.
- Mouse and keyboard: more precise aiming and faster building and editing once practised, with no aim assist.
Plenty of top players use each. Pick the one you enjoy, and give a new input at least a week before deciding.
FAQ
Does Fortnite support controllers on PC?
Yes, natively, including Xbox, PlayStation and most standard controllers. No extra software is needed.
Why are my button prompts switching between keyboard and controller?
Because Fortnite detects input from both. Even a slight mouse movement switches the prompts. Leave the mouse alone while you play with a controller.
Can I use a PS5 controller on PC for Fortnite?
Yes, over USB or Bluetooth. USB is the most reliable.
What's the best controller layout?
Builder Pro, for almost everyone who builds.
Do I get aim assist on PC with a controller?
Yes. Aim assist applies to controller input on any platform.
