How to Sell Steam Trading Cards for Wallet Money (and What They're Really Worth)
October 5, 2026
If you own games on Steam, you probably have trading cards sitting in your inventory. Selling them turns them into real Steam Wallet money. It is not much, but it is free, and it adds up across a large library. Here is how it works and what to expect.
Where trading cards come from
Many Steam games (not all) have a set of trading cards. When you play a game you bought that has cards, you get card drops over time. Things to know:
- You only get about half the set from playing. The rest has to be bought or traded if you want the full set for a badge.
- Drops come from playtime, usually over the first few hours.
- Free-to-play games do not give drops just for playing. They only drop cards after you have spent money in the game.
- Your inventory (profile → Inventory → Steam) shows your cards, and the game's store page shows "Steam Trading Cards" if it has them.
Before you can sell: market requirements
The Steam Community Market has security rules. To list items, your account needs to meet the requirements Steam shows on the market page, usually including:
- Steam Guard enabled for at least 15 days.
- A purchase on Steam in the last year, and an account that is not limited. A "limited" account is one that has never spent money on Steam.
- The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator to confirm listings straight away. Without it, listings are held for confirmation and sales take longer.
- A recent password reset or new device can put a temporary hold on the market.
If you cannot sell, the market page tells you exactly which requirement you are missing.
How to sell a card
- Open your Inventory and click a trading card.
- Click Sell.
- Steam shows the current buy orders and listings. Enter the price the buyer pays. Steam shows what you will receive after fees.
- Confirm the listing in the Steam mobile app.
- When someone buys it, the money goes straight into your Steam Wallet.
Tip: if you want it sold fast, match the highest buy order. If you are patient, list at the lowest current sell price and wait.
The fees
Every Community Market sale has about a 15% fee: 5% to Steam and 10% to the game's publisher. There is also a minimum fee of a couple of cents, which hits cheap cards hard. Cards selling for $0.03 leave you with $0.01.
What are cards actually worth?
The honest answer: most cards sell for a few cents. Common cards from popular games, which have millions of copies in circulation, are often $0.03 to $0.10. Cards from less common games, or from games with few owners, can sell for $0.20 to $1 or more. Foil cards, the rare version, sell for much more than normal cards.
A rough guide:
| Library size | Realistic total from selling all drops |
|---|---|
| 10 games with cards | $1–$3 |
| 50 games with cards | $5–$15 |
| 200+ games with cards | $20–$60 or more |
Prices change all the time, and seasonal sales also bring event cards and items. It is a nice top-up, not an income.
Selling vs crafting badges
Instead of selling, you can collect a full set and craft a badge, which gives you Steam XP, a random emoticon or background, and a coupon. If you care about your Steam level, crafting makes sense. If you just want money, selling the half-set you get for free is usually better than buying the other half to craft.
Wallet money from the market stays on Steam
Money from market sales is Steam Wallet funds only. You cannot withdraw it to a bank or PayPal. It can buy games, DLC, in-game items and more market items. Wallet balances also have a limit (about $2,000 in the US), so market income cannot build up forever.
That also means anyone offering to "buy your wallet balance for PayPal" is a scammer. See our Steam account scam guide.
Other ways to add wallet money without spending cash
If you want enough wallet money for a full game rather than cents, cards will not get you there quickly. Other legitimate options:
- Steam gift cards from rewards sites. Sites like XPReward pay Steam gift cards for offers and surveys. On XPReward the first card is $25 (3,600 points), which takes days to weeks to earn, not minutes. Our free Steam gift card guide compares the options.
- Free games and giveaways. Not money, but they save you money. See free PC games, legitimately.
Combine card sales with a gift card and time it for a big sale. Our Steam sale calendar shows the next one.
FAQ
Do I get cards from games in a Steam Family?
No. Card drops are tied to games you own, not borrowed ones. See how Steam Families works.
Why can't I sell my cards right after buying a game?
New purchases and new accounts can have short market holds. Wait them out.
Are card idling tools allowed?
Third-party "idlers" that simulate playtime are widely used, and Valve has tolerated them for years, but they are not official tools. Only download well-known open-source ones, because fake idlers are a common way to spread malware.
