Gift Card Code Not Working? Every Common Error and the Fix

You earned it, you claimed it, and the store says no. Before you assume the code is dead, work through this list — the overwhelming majority of rejected gift card codes are one of six things, and five of them you can fix yourself in under a minute.

This covers Steam, PlayStation and Xbox, which is the whole XPReward Reward Store catalogue.

Check these first, in this order

1. Character confusion

Gift card codes mix letters and digits in fonts that make some pairs nearly identical. The usual suspects:

• 0 (zero) vs O (letter)
• 1 (one) vs I (capital i) vs l (lowercase L)
• 5 vs S, 8 vs B, 2 vs Z

Copy and paste rather than typing. If you are reading the code off a screen, paste it. If you must type it, try the alternate character for each ambiguous position.

2. Hidden whitespace

Copying a code often drags a trailing space or a line break with it. Most redemption boxes reject that as an invalid code without telling you why. Paste into a plain text field first, check there is nothing before or after the code, then paste that.

Also: most codes are entered without dashes even when displayed with them, though some fields add them automatically. Try it both ways.

3. Region and currency mismatch — the big one

This is the single most common genuine failure, and it is not a bug.

• Steam: a Steam Wallet code is tied to the currency it was issued in. A USD code will not redeem on an account whose wallet currency is set to something else. Steam does not convert it for you at redemption. Check your account's country and wallet currency before you claim.
• PlayStation: PSN voucher codes are region-locked to the account's country. A code for one PlayStation Store region will be rejected outright on an account registered to another. Sony's own voucher code help is the authority here.
• Xbox: codes are tied to the Microsoft account's country and the currency of the card.

If you have multiple accounts, make sure you are redeeming on the one whose region matches. You cannot change the region of the code.

4. The wrong redemption screen

Each platform has several code fields, and they are not interchangeable:

• A Steam Wallet code goes in Games → Redeem a Steam Wallet Code, not in the product key activation box used for game keys. A game key goes in Activate a Product on Steam. Putting one in the other returns an invalid code error.
• On Xbox, use the Redeem Code flow on the console, on xbox.com, in the Xbox app, or in Microsoft Store on PC. Our step-by-step Xbox redemption guide walks through all four.

5. "This code has already been used"

Three realistic causes:

• You already redeemed it — check your wallet balance or purchase history on the platform before assuming anything. It is more common than people expect, especially on a second attempt after a slow-loading page.
• Someone else did. If you pasted the code anywhere public, shared it in a Discord server, or sent it to someone who offered to "verify" it, treat it as spent. Never share a code with anyone.
• A double-submit. A slow confirmation can look like a failure, and the second attempt then reports it as used because the first one succeeded.

6. Too many failed attempts

Entering several invalid codes in a row triggers a temporary lockout, and the platform keeps returning an invalid code error even once you finally enter a correct one. Steam does this, and it is the reason a code that "definitely worked yesterday" suddenly does not.

If you have tried more than two or three times, stop. Wait an hour or more, then try once, carefully, with a pasted code. Repeated attempts extend the lockout.

Platform-specific gotchas

Steam. Wallet funds can only be spent on Steam — games, in-game items, Market purchases — and are not withdrawable as cash. There are also country-level restrictions on some gift card products; Steam documents these in its gift card region restrictions article.

PlayStation. Your PSN wallet has a maximum balance, and a top-up that would exceed it is rejected. Spend some of the balance first, then redeem. Codes also cannot be redeemed on a child account without the family manager's involvement.

Xbox. Some codes are for a specific product (a Game Pass term, a game) rather than store credit, and those will not add a balance — they apply the entitlement instead. Check what you actually claimed.

If it still will not redeem

Once you have ruled out the six causes above, contact us through Contact with:

• The reward you claimed and the date you claimed it.
• The exact error message, word for word, and a screenshot of it.
• The platform and the account region you are trying to redeem on.
• Confirmation that you have not shared the code with anyone.

Be aware of one thing in advance: once a code has been revealed to you, it cannot simply be reissued on request, because the code is now out of our control. That is not a brush-off — it is why codes are treated as cash across the whole industry. Genuine issuing faults are resolved with the supplier, and that process needs the error message and the claim record, which is why the list above matters.

Protecting a code you have not redeemed yet

• Redeem it yourself, immediately, on the platform. Do not save it for later in a chat log.
• Never send a code to anyone who asks to check, verify or trade it. The FTC's advice on gift card scams is blunt about this for good reason.

FAQ

Why does my gift card code say invalid?
Most often a mistyped character, hidden whitespace, a region or currency mismatch, or the wrong redemption screen. Repeated failed attempts can also trigger a temporary lockout that keeps returning the same error.

Can I redeem a Steam code from another region?
No. The code's currency has to match your Steam account's wallet currency. Steam will not convert it at redemption.

My code says it has already been used, but I never redeemed it.
Check the platform's own purchase or wallet history first. If it genuinely was not you, and the code was shared anywhere, treat it as compromised and contact us with the details.

How long should I wait after a lockout?
At least an hour, and do not keep retrying in the meantime — that extends it.

Do codes expire?
Store credit codes generally do not expire, but product- or promotion-specific codes can. Check what you claimed.
