Can You Use a PSN Gift Card From Another Country? (Region Rules Explained)
October 10, 2026
Short answer: no. A PlayStation Store gift card only works on an account from the same country or region it was sold for. A US card won't redeem on a UK account, and a UK card won't redeem on an Indian one. This catches out a lot of people who buy cards online or get one as a gift from abroad.
Why PSN cards are region-locked
Each PlayStation account belongs to one PlayStation Store region, set when the account was created. Every store has its own currency, prices and games. A gift card is just money in one store's currency, so Sony only lets you redeem it in that store.
PlayStation Support says it plainly: voucher codes can only be redeemed in the same store region, and you can't change the region of an existing account.
How to check your account's region
On PS5, go to Settings → Users and Accounts → Account → Profile and look for your country or region. On the website, sign in at store.playstation.com and open Account Management → Account Information. Your store also shows prices in your local currency, which is a quick clue.
How to check a card's region before you buy
- Physical cards show the country, currency, or a flag. A card priced in dollars from a US store is a US card.
- Digital cards should name the region in the product title, such as "PSN $25 (US)". If a listing doesn't name the region, don't buy it.
- Check the currency. If your account shows prices in pounds, you need a card in pounds.
Bought a card for the wrong region?
- Don't redeem anything yet. An unredeemed code can still be returned or exchanged.
- Go back to the seller. Major retailers will usually swap or refund a wrong-region code that hasn't been used, especially if the listing wasn't clear.
- Give it to someone in that region. A friend or relative with an account in the card's country can use it, or you can swap it for a card that works for you.
Once a card is redeemed, the money is tied to that account. It can't be moved.
What about making a second account?
You can make a second PlayStation account set to another region, redeem the card there, and buy games with it. The games will play on your console. But it's awkward: your trophies and saves are split across accounts, some games and online features need the purchasing account, and the second account still needs its own local payment methods afterwards. It only makes sense if you'll keep buying from that region.
VPN tricks
Some sites suggest a VPN or a fake address. Don't rely on this. It's against PlayStation's terms, often doesn't work, and the risk is your account. A $25 card isn't worth that.
Avoid "cheap" cards from abroad
Region mismatches are also a common sign of a bad deal. Sites selling foreign cards at a "discount" often send codes that are the wrong region, already used, or stolen. Buy from a real shop or the official store. Our guide to spotting reward and gift card scams has more warning signs.
