Can You Use an Xbox Gift Card From Another Country? (Region Rules 2026)
October 10, 2026
If you've tried to redeem an Xbox gift card and got a message like "This code isn't available in your region", the card was sold for a different country than your Microsoft account. Xbox gift cards are region-locked, and in most cases you can't get around it.
How the Xbox region lock works
An Xbox gift card adds money to your Microsoft account balance in a set currency. Your Microsoft account has a country or region, and the balance can only be in that country's currency. A card sold in the US adds US dollars, so it only redeems on a US account. The same goes for every other country.
This also applies to Game Pass codes. Subscription codes are often even stricter than gift cards, so check the region on those too.
"Can't I just change my region?"
You can change your Microsoft account's region, but it causes more problems than it solves:
- Your existing balance doesn't move. Microsoft says account funds can't be converted to another currency or moved between regions. Money in the old region stays there.
- You may not be able to change back soon. Users report Microsoft limits how often you can change region, roughly once every three months.
- Subscriptions can break. An active Game Pass subscription may need to be cancelled or run out before the region change goes through.
Changing region just to use one gift card usually costs more than the card is worth.
How to check a card's region before you buy
- The currency. A card priced in US dollars is for US accounts. A card in pounds is for UK accounts.
- The listing. Digital cards should name the region, like "Xbox $25 (US)". If it doesn't, ask or skip it.
- Your account's region. Sign in at account.microsoft.com and look under Your info → Country or region.
Got a wrong-region card? What to do
- Don't try workarounds that need a VPN or fake address. They're against Microsoft's terms, often fail, and can get the account flagged.
- Go back to the seller while the code is unused. Retailers usually refund or swap a wrong-region code, especially if the listing wasn't clear about the country.
- Give it to someone in that country, or swap it for a card that matches your region.
Beware "cheap" Xbox codes
Grey-market sites often sell cards from cheaper countries at a "discount" and leave you to work out the region problem. Some codes are also stolen or already used. Buying from a real shop or the Microsoft Store avoids all of this. Our scam warning signs guide lists the red flags.
