GTA 6 Leaks Are Exploding as Rockstar Breaks Its Silence

Rockstar Games has finally addressed the storm of Grand Theft Auto VI leaks spreading across the internet — and the timing could hardly be worse.

For years, Rockstar Games has guarded Grand Theft Auto VI with extraordinary secrecy. But over the past week, that wall has started to crack.

Unauthorized gameplay footage has surfaced online, revealing scenes, characters and locations from what appears to be a development build of the highly anticipated game. Now Rockstar has publicly responded, Take-Two Interactive is pursuing legal action, and the gaming community is racing to figure out just how much of GTA 6 has been exposed before launch.

Rockstar Calls the Leaks “Heartbreaking”

Rockstar broke its silence on August 26, acknowledging the leaked footage and apologizing to fans.

The studio said the leaks were not how it intended players to see the game and described the situation as deeply upsetting for the development team. Rockstar also confirmed that development is “nearly there”, suggesting the game remains on track despite the disruption.

Most importantly, Rockstar has not announced another delay.

The official release date remains November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

That is significant because GTA 6 has already been delayed once. Rockstar originally targeted an earlier release before moving the game to November 2026 to give the studio additional time for polish.

What Has Leaked?

The leaked material reportedly includes gameplay footage from a relatively advanced build of GTA 6.

Among the material circulating online are clips featuring protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, gameplay sequences and portions of the game's world. Reports have also described footage that appears to reveal substantial portions of the Leonida map.

Some leaked clips appear to show ordinary gameplay, while others reportedly contain story-related material.

That creates an obvious problem for Rockstar: spoilers.

The studio has spent years carefully controlling how GTA 6 is revealed. Every trailer, screenshot and announcement has been designed to build anticipation without giving away too much.

The leaks potentially disrupt that entire strategy.

Take-Two Is Going After the Source

Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, is not simply watching the leaks spread.

The company has taken legal steps in an attempt to identify the people behind them.

Take-Two filed subpoena requests involving Microsoft and Discord, seeking information that could help identify accounts connected to the distribution of the leaked material. Reports say the requests include information connected to accounts, IP addresses and other identifying data.

Microsoft has also indicated that it is working with Take-Two and Rockstar to help protect their intellectual property.

There is, however, an important distinction surrounding Discord: Discord's representatives said on August 24 that the company had not yet been served with the subpoena at that time and would evaluate its validity and scope if served.

Who Is Behind the GTA 6 Leaks?

The leaks have been associated online with an account or persona known as CyberLeek.

However, the identity and exact circumstances behind the leak have not been publicly established by Rockstar.

That means gamers should be careful about treating every claim circulating on social media as fact.

The internet is currently filled with supposed explanations about how the footage was obtained, who is responsible and what else may have been compromised. Some of those claims remain unverified.

What is clear is that the leaked material has spread widely enough for Take-Two to begin actively pursuing information from major technology platforms.

The Timing Is Brutal for Rockstar

Perhaps the most frustrating part for Rockstar is when this happened.

The studio was already preparing a major official GTA 6 presentation.

Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on August 27 at 3 p.m. ET on Netflix, followed by a release on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the GTA 6 website at 9 p.m. ET.

Now, instead of entering that presentation with a completely controlled information cycle, Rockstar is dealing with leaked footage appearing ahead of its official showcase.

In other words, the leaks have arrived almost exactly when Rockstar was preparing to show the game to the world on its own terms.

Will the Leaks Delay GTA 6?

For now, there is no indication of another delay.

Rockstar's latest statement says the game is nearly finished and asks players to wait until November 19 to experience it themselves. The company's official GTA 6 website continues to list November 19, 2026 as the release date.

That means the immediate question isn't whether GTA 6 is being delayed.

It's whether Rockstar can regain control of the game's marketing campaign.

And tomorrow's extended look could be the first major test.

Rockstar Still Has One Massive Advantage

Despite everything that has leaked, the majority of players have not experienced GTA 6.

That's important.

Rockstar still controls the official trailers, marketing campaign, gameplay presentation and — most importantly — the actual game.

A few leaked clips cannot replicate the experience of playing an enormous Rockstar open-world game from beginning to end.

And Rockstar appears determined to move forward.

The studio's message to fans is essentially simple: wait a little longer.

Because on November 19, players will finally get to explore Vice City and the wider state of Leonida themselves.

GTA 6 Has Become an Even Bigger Story

The leaks may have damaged Rockstar's carefully planned reveal strategy, but they have also demonstrated something else:

GTA 6 remains one of the most anticipated games in the world.

Within days, leaked clips have triggered legal action, enormous social-media discussion and a fresh wave of speculation about the game's world and characters.
