Can You Buy V-Bucks or Robux With a Steam, PSN or Xbox Gift Card?

Store gift cards are the most common way younger players pay for in-game currency, and also the most common source of "I bought the wrong card" frustration. The short answer:

The reason is simple. A store gift card only works in its own store. Fortnite and Roblox both sell their currencies in the Xbox and PlayStation stores, but neither game is on Steam, so Steam wallet money cannot reach them.

V-Bucks with an Xbox gift card

1. Redeem the Xbox card on your Microsoft account (on the console, at microsoft.com/redeem, or in the Xbox app). Our Xbox redeem guide walks through it.
2. The money becomes your Microsoft account balance.
3. Launch Fortnite on your Xbox, open the V-Bucks tab in the Item Shop and pick a bundle.
4. At checkout, the Microsoft Store uses your balance first.

The same balance works for V-Bucks bought through the Microsoft Store on a Windows PC, as long as the Fortnite account is linked to the Microsoft account that holds the balance.

V-Bucks with a PlayStation gift card

1. Redeem the PSN card under Settings → Users and Accounts → Payment and Subscriptions → Redeem Codes on PS5, or on the PlayStation Store website.
2. Launch Fortnite on the PlayStation and buy V-Bucks in the Item Shop. The PlayStation Store charges your wallet.

Do V-Bucks move between platforms?

Mostly, yes. Epic's shared wallet means V-Bucks bought on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and mobile all appear in one balance, wherever you log in with the same Epic account.

The big exception is Nintendo Switch. V-Bucks bought on a Nintendo console stay on Nintendo and do not join the shared balance. V-Bucks earned in-game (from the Battle Pass, quests or Save the World) are shared everywhere.

So an Xbox or PSN gift card is a good way to fund Fortnite even if you mostly play on PC.

Robux with an Xbox gift card

1. Redeem the Xbox card to your Microsoft balance.
2. Open Roblox on Xbox and choose Robux from the menu, or find the Robux bundles in the Microsoft Store.
3. Buy the bundle. The balance pays for it.

Robux belong to your Roblox account, not the console, so Robux bought on Xbox can be spent on any device you log into Roblox from.

Robux with a PlayStation gift card

Roblox has been on PlayStation since 2023. Add the card to your PSN wallet, open Roblox on the console and buy Robux in-game. The PlayStation Store takes the payment from your wallet.

A note on value

Roblox gives you more Robux per dollar when you buy on its website or with an official Roblox gift card than when you buy through a console store. If you are choosing what to buy from scratch, an official Roblox card is better value. If you already have Xbox or PSN money, using it for Robux is fine, but you will get slightly fewer Robux.

What a Steam gift card can buy

Steam wallet money works for in-game currency in games sold on Steam that sell their currency through Steam's checkout. That covers a lot of popular free-to-play and live-service games on the platform, plus Steam Community Market items. For each game, check whether the in-game store opens a Steam payment window. If it does, wallet funds work.

It will never work for games that are not on Steam, and that includes Fortnite, Roblox, Valorant and League of Legends.

Region matters more than platform

The most common reason a card "doesn't work" for V-Bucks or Robux is not the game. It is a region mismatch between the card and the account. A US Xbox card cannot be redeemed on a UK Microsoft account, and the same is true for PSN. Getting the card without paying for it
